Oakland Bay Bridge E2/T1 Foundation?-?San Francisco, Calif.
The E2 foundation, on the east end of the project, consists of a composite steel and concrete footing founded on 16 cast-in-steel shell piles driven 300 ft into the San Francisco Bay mud. Two pier columns are constructed on top of the concrete encased steel footing. This pier is very similar in nature to the 28 foundations built on the Skyway project directly to the east. The T1 foundation at the west end of the project is the foundation for the main suspension tower of the self anchored suspension bridge. It consists of 13 cast-in-place drilled hole piles which extend approximately 200 ft into the Alameda rock formation. A steel footing is attached to the 13 piles and is then encased in concrete. A 1,700-ton tub was lifted onto falsework towers. Anchor bolts are installed through the footing that attach the steel structure of the tower to the footing.
