Oakland Bay Bridge Skyway Segment?-?San Francisco, Calif.
$1.2 billion Skyway Bridge project included the construction of a mile and a half of side-by-side viaduct bridge structures in San Francisco Bay. The contract was the first of several to replace the existing east span of the San Francisco Oakland Bay Bridge. Each structure is designed to carry five lanes of vehicular traffic and has two breakdown lanes.
General Construction was part of the KFM Joint Venture team and had major involvement in the foundation construction work. The project had numerous unprecedented construction challenges. The bridge is founded 28 piers. Each pier is supported by 8 ft diameter 320 ft long cast in steel shell piles that required some of the biggest pile driving equipment in the world to drive the 425 ton piles. The piles support one-piece 2,200 ton structural steel footing boxes that had to be set in one piece. Piers and pier tables were cast-in-place and required unique formwork and falsework to build. The precast segmental structure required the casting and erection of 452 precast concrete segments weighing up to 800 tons each.
